Recycling Guide - Batteries & Accumulators

Around 120 million batteries are sold in Switzerland every year, and almost a third, which corresponds to around 1,500 tonnes, still ends up in the trash. This is despite the fact that there is an obligation to take back goods in Switzerland. But who doesn't know that, somewhere there is a small box in which a few batteries have accumulated over the years. Too few to take away and they are always forgotten when disposed of until they end up in the rubbish.

In addition to harmful heavy metals, batteries and accumulators contain many valuable raw materials. Iron, manganese and zinc can be recovered to a high degree of purity. Any pollutants are collected and disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. So it's worth recycling batteries.

Please throw used batteries and accumulators into the WeRecycle collection bag in a battery bag (available free of charge in stores) or another clearly visible container so that they cannot leak. During sorting, these are separated and sent to Swiss recycling (Batrec Industrie AG, Wimmis).

The recycling rate for batteries and accumulators in Switzerland is around 65%.
