Recycling Guide - Glass

Our common glass is primarily made from silicon dioxide, better known as sand. Glass is gas-tight, acid-resistant and tasteless, making it an ideal packaging material for the food industry. The high melting temperatures of up to 1600 degrees make glass production an energy-intensive industry. On average, around 1,950 kWh of energy are consumed per ton of ready-to-sell glass, with energy-related CO2 emissions of around 500 kg.

Ecologically, the reusable bottle is the most sensible glass packaging, but glass is also an ideal recycling material. It can be reused almost indefinitely without loss of quality.

In comparison, recycled glass saves around 25% energy and of course the raw materials required. Today, up to 90% used glass is added to glass production.

That's why glass packaging is too bad to end up in the trash. Contrary to popular belief, waste incineration plants do not require glass to operate efficiently.
